Instant Karma: Feral Vices

Kristen Hernandez

Today the Kentucky two piece, Feral Vices, dropped their newest single 'Karma'. Now it has been a few years since we heard new music from the talented twosome, but this track packs a conscious punch and was most definitely worth the wait. With their last release being their sophomore EP, ‘With Offerings’, we still hear the same mindful lyrics, but this time around we are getting a bit darker sound from the duo. They once again ventured to NJ, where they worked with Nik Bruzzese on the new track and we all know that when bands venture to The Gradwell House, we will be getting top tier music. This new single is just that and if you've never listened to FV before, you'll find that their sound is honestly one of a kind. I definitely could compare and contrast or you could just enjoy the unique sound and raw, conscious lyricism that this band has to offer. To get a little more background on the track I asked member, Alex Hoagland, a few questions about the birth of ‘Karma’, current influences and of course future releases. Enjoy his responses below!

For starters, congrats on the new single. It’s phenomenal! Can you give us some background on the song and also where and who you recorded with?

So, Karma took a few different forms over the years with the chorus riff being the only part left over from the earlier versions of the song. I had the chorus basically laid out and was never happy with where it went from there so it just kind of sat around for awhile. The song is about the things we do and the consequences of them. Whether it be fitting in, self-destructive behavior, or even the political side of things like voting against our own interests just to satisfy some belief system we follow. We recorded the song at the Gradwell House with Nik Bruzzese. It was mixed by Martin Ehrencrona and mastered by Magnus Lindberg who both have worked on the last couple of Refused releases.

Like I stated a few years ago, in my opinion, you guys have a sound that I can’t quite lump into a genre. Which I think is quite rad. The new track definitely has a more polished sound and lyrically still hits us like With Offerings does. But were there any new influences in the last couple years that you feel changed your sound and lyric writing?

I think our sound got a little darker this time around mostly just because of the headspace I was in. I had a rough year with losing some valuable friendships and a lot of drama around that. So, it sent me to a pretty dark place and I used the music to help process it all and bring myself out of it. I also think we kind of accepted all the things that we are. Everything we’ve done up until this point has been parts that you’ll hear, but we pulled them all together into one cohesive sound. So, you have the Jesus Lizard, Refused, Queens of the Stone Age, all those kinds of bands all melded together into this Frankenstein’s monster of a band that is us.

With the new single I’m assuming we can expect an LP or EP release in the near future? If you’re able to, can you give us a little insight to when and if you’ll be releasing?

Well, you caught us. We’re actually releasing an EP later this year but are releasing it all one song at a time and when the EP comes out, the songs will be in a different order so you can listen to it and have an entirely different experience with the songs and how they relate to each other. So, definitely keep your eyes peeled for that!

In a world where accountability and open mindedness seem to be frowned upon and ridiculed, it's refreshing to hear music that touches on such matters and to put it simply, makes you think outside the damn box. Feral Vices gives us such music and when bands create music that stays true to what they believe in and stand for, well there's no doubt there's some good karma headed their way. Please check out this new single, follow these dudes on all those social platforms and be sure to stay tuned for future releases by this dynamic duo.
